Now, though, I feel excited again about picking up my camera. Continuing my mission to photograph the intricacies of the Bay Area, showcasing the area as an art piece. Maybe one day I’ll display a map and represent points as my pictures. That sounds like an interesting project.
Perhaps I’m too commercial. So far I’ve done everything but place advertisements on my website. Maybe it’s time I treat my photography as art instead of something that can generate a buck immediately.
Maybe I should attend a photography class. Alongside business classes. I can transform into one of those profitable artists. But then again, I would have to constantly gauge market demand and invest further in equipment. And marketing expenses—PPC ads, affiliate advertising, displays banners, galleries, revenue shares—eventually grow and grow and provide diminishing returns.
Yeesh! No wonder I’m trapped in a slump. I’m thinking too hard about possibilities instead of present abilities.
I’ll sneakily shake softly the slump that slithered so sneakily like a slippery snake into my soul. By picking up my camera again. And practicing the capture of the perfect photograph with my humble Olympus E-520. Maybe I’ll keep admiring and imitating the photographic artwork of this guy (flatbackoverchrome photography) [chuckles].

Fine art composers follow laws of composition. Composition is the arrangement of elements in an artwork. Artful elements consist of lines, shapes, colors, hues, textures, form, space (positive vs. negative space), and depth perception. Weaving these combinations together, the artist creates their desired artwork that (hopefully) leaves an impression in the viewers’ minds. Similarly, when photographers consider the elements of design in their shots—the positioning of different elements of composition—they are utilizing the practices that fine artists use. However the photographer deals with a disadvantage that an artist rarely suffers with: availability. The artist can resort to their imagination and paint the image to their canvas, but a photographer is limited to their finite environment. A certain amount of imagination is required in order to frame their shot. Because fine art photography is the practice of creating artistic photographs—using your camera and environment to artistically express yourself.
Still confused? Consider the following image below:
Obviously it’s a photograph of the Golden Gate Bridge. But notice the feeling that the image evokes—a romantic lore with one of the most infamous landmarks in the world. In the background, the humongous towering presence of the Bridge contrasts the sight of the tiny-looking people in front of it. But the individuals are couples enjoying moments of romance, enjoying the presence of one another while the giant Bridge tower stands in the background. The Bridge itself is a romantic symbolism of how it captures our hearts, and the hearts of tourists and photographers obsessed with taking capturing its image.

It’s called “Loneliness.” The log is photographed alone, combined with a greyscale tone. In most instances, modern black and white photography artistically depicts an artful overtone—albeit emotional. Notice the amount of negative space on the left area of the image—it’s completely unoccupied. In art, negative space is discouraged unless there’s an artistic purpose. In this photograph, the negative space is a metaphor of lonely emotion.

Point Richmond is an isolated pocket of the bigger city of Richmond. It’s a railroad town that hosts the long-running Burlington Northern train yard and the Chevron refinery. Barely any sidewalks lead to this Richmond railroad town—which perhaps explain its isolation from the rest of the city. Other sections of the city brims with excitement and activity—this area remains serene and retains its small town vibe.
Among the railroad tracks strewn in the area, one in particular is unique. A locomotive hasn’t ran on this track since World War II, and it’s a very physical museum. People walk on it daily while staring at the sun falling behind the Mt. Tamalpais range in the distance, and hearing the noise of cars driving on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. The track splits into a pair of two rail paths and both lead to a defunct pier, another relic of the city’s past. This area was once a bustling ferry port—now it’s a tranquil park for people to walk and relax. It’s a perfect spot to gaze at the day and night skies.
The idea for the astronomical background entered my imagination when driving through the area at night. The stars were clearly visible, along with a bright crescent moon. A few high clouds floated across the night sky and formed a colorful reflection from the open water bay below it all. I poured that scene into this image. Showing the universe at the edge of the background featuring railroad tracks leading straight into it. I also darkened the hue of the surrounding plants and shrubs, creating a nighttime effect (which was originally a daytime photograph).

First Steps Off the BART Train…
I heard the sound of jazz. And then noticed a bus sticking out into the street surrounded by large crowd. The fun had begun already (at 6pm)! The harmony of the trumpet and the drumset and the guitar pleased my open ears, and so I checked out the center of attention. Students from the Oakland School of Visual Arts.
The Car Show
After the jazz band stopped, I continued walking towards the main Art Murmur event. A small parking lot was crowded with Impalas, Mustangs, Chevrolets, and other amazing shiny vehicles. Low-riders bumped up and down while a mix of 1950s pop music and Mexican songs filtered out the conversations that happened everywhere.
Non-Profit Tagging
A new feature at this event was donate & tag. For a donation, you could graffiti tag a car with your own writing. I thought this was an ingenious way that allowed people self-expression for a worthy cause—if you were sympathetic to the cause of a free Tibet.
Spontaneous Dance Group
A group of people decided to put on a short dance demonstration.
The Jugglers
My favorite, impressive live performance of the evening! These aerobatic professionals drew a big crowd and impressed everyone with their risky moves. I foresee a future Vegas show starring these gymnastic folks.
Comedy Corner Club
A random guy introduced a line-up of comedians. Some of them were funny, others needed further refinement. I only recorded one video, but I may tape more of these comedies in the future.
You’re A Videogame Character!
An eye-set that turns you into a videogame character! These folks used it and tried to navigate the maze. This was a hilarious experience to watch for a while.

Not only was I proven wrong, but the Art Murmur/First Friday event delivered the usual spontaneity and surprises that I expected to see. I was very happy to know that Oakland hadn’t abandoned their best artistic and economic-engine festival.

I wasn’t too pleased with this photograph. While the lighting was perfect, and the scene selection was magnificent, the background appeared too blurry. I should’ve narrowed the aperture more and adjusted the light settings likewise. However I’ll let you decide the level of quality for this image.

I still have no idea what the initials meant. My thought was MASHER, but I didn’t see the letter “A” anywhere. It was definitely Old Crow’s tribe and another side of the cabin contained the signatures of Old Crow, Ohlone, Masher, and Noface. The artwork is easily observable from the freeway.

Old Crow strikes again! And the artist brings along other team members–Noface, Ohlone, and Masher. After the City of Berkeley, CA painted over the previous graffiti works the trio arrived and re-decorated the cabins. The graffiti works are an inescapable sight while driving down the I-80 freeway.

Berkeley is exploding with graffiti! The city erased this previously tagged cabin (photograph of the old graffiti is here), but that wouldn’t stop the artists. They simply waited and returned. And with a team! Well, the first instance may have been a team but this was definitely teamwork. Behind the bush, where the front and side corners conjoin, the authors of this piece placed their signature. Although the giant “Old Crow” is missing, its signature is among others. Who are these others?

WOW! WOW! WOW! WOW! The bridge lights sparkle like stars, the ocean waves are soft and misty, and the rear car lights stream seamlessly. San Francisco city lights shine in the background!
I waited patiently for three hours. Normally I’d leave and return later, but I couldn’t brave two more walks across the bridge. I napped for two hours, interrupted by tourists wanting me to take their picture. At 6:30, I noticed people arriving with tripods and claiming their spots. Since I might lose an opportunity, I awoke and claimed my spot to capture my desired view. Later on, all the tourist crowds dispersed and replaced entirely with other professional photographers. Chatters of apertures and filters substituted previous conversations of traveling and family affairs.
7:00pm came. I started adjusting my camera settings and taking test shots. My biggest worry was finding the correct ISO balance, since my camera notoriously underperforms under low light. However there was just enough light in the sky and clouds to accomplish snapping this image.

In the 1930s and early 1940s, this area was a giant dynamite factory. The nearby community of Parchester housed workers, and a company-owned train ran down Giant Highway. After the company shutdown, the state of California purchased the land and transformed it into a state park. Today, remnants of the old factory lay everywhere. This beautiful park holds many secrets—including a beach that few people know about. It’s in plain sight, but the path isn’t very visible.

I snapped this photograph at the beginning of my hike. This waterfall is actually a tiny stream, blocked off by a chain fence. I squeezed my lens through the fence and focused as best as possible. I left early that morning to capture some photographs in Emeryville. After I finished, I was driving through Berkeley on the freeway. Then I noticed a massive graffiti calligraphy sprayed on a park cabin. I circled back and drove to the park. After photographing the graffiti, I started to return to my car. That’s when I noticed a strange-looking tree stump. It stood alone, facing the pinkish overcast lake. Since it wasn’t apart of a group, and the morning clouds were still decorating the reflective lake below it, it presented an excellent photography opportunity.
While processing the series of photographs, I noticed an”oozing” effect with the green moss growing on it. It appeared that the stump was “bleeding.” After playing with special filters in my image editing program, I produced a separate image that resembled the tree dripping blood. And produced a darker background tone as well.

Gazing at Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” I realize that Van Gogh must have felt like an ant while staring at the stars. The mysterious vastness of the universe illuminates the night sky. You come to realize that human civilization, even our planet earth, can encounter a crushing end at any moment from the boot of the universe—-like a person stomping on an insect.
I experienced the same Vincent Van Gogh inferiority feeling when I ogled the expansive night stars on top of the blinking San Francisco skyscrapers. I failed to evoke that emotion after snapping several photographs. But I discovered one photograph that was possible to be transformed into a piece of art. After toying with Photoshop’s special effects, I figured out how to change the street lamps and skyscrapers. I was proud to have been able to keep the Christmas lights outlining the office towers, but I needed to replace the night sky landscape.
A simple solution slipped into my mind: replace it. I deleted the night sky. First I attempted to fit the full moon in the background but the scene became weird. Then I inserted northern lights, but proportions were an issue. Finally, I substituted the night background with imagery of shining starlights and bright gas clouds. Success!
The universe stares down at the small city of San Francisco, like an individual looking down at an ant underneath their shoes.

]]>I traveled to the beach, next to the Golden Gate Bridge. First I was hunting for surfers, but was distraught when there weren’t any. So I thought…what am I going to photograph?
Then I walked underneath the bridge, towards the cliff, and observed a beach area all the way down under. I looked at the waves, and became determined to reach the beach coast. After walking for a while, I figured out how to reach it.
I took many photographs, and I couldn’t decide which ones to keep. So I created a video photographic collage and added music.

Every single trail is a muddy sinkhole. When I plant my boot into the ground, it’s sinking fast into soft soil. The picture on the left exemplifies how every trail appears. My quick thinking avoidance skills turn on spontaneously–stomping through tall grass hopping anywhere to avoid a muddy mess. Very difficult, but the reward is amazing.
Rain, cold weather, and overcast skies ruled this area for the past two weeks. Hiking and photography was an impossibility. However, this Saturday I enjoyed the weather by venturing onto Tilden’s Pine Trail. I was worried that the winter, even though there was gargantuan amounts of sunshine, wouldn’t present pleasant photographic scenery but I was wrong. I think I snapped my best landscape picture yet (coming soon).
My friend joined this hike, and at one point my legs were burning and he was kind enough to snap a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge far in the distance. He was amazed at the sight of colorful sails dotting the deep-blue seascape, and the camera lens’ ability to view traffic on the bridge.
Another sight that surprised both of us was the appearance of a group of stairs. The area was very shaded and chilly. Frost grew on the plants and the steps–that was how low the temperature reached. I created great photographs, but I only chose to feature one on my main site.

Spring and Summer creates a yin and yang effect in the Bay Area. Workers traveling from inland, sunny, hot areas such as Walnut Creek and Concord will often grab their coats–even if the temperatures are around 90 to 100 degrees. That’s because the majority of commuters drive to San Francisco or other coastal cities–where fog and cold weather dominates most of the climate. Yet, travel south along the coast and bay–Fremont, Hayward, San Mateo, Pacifica–and the warming sun returns. Same if you travel north–Hercules, Martinez, Pinole, Pittsburgh, San Rafael, Vallejo. This is the infamous microclimate.
How are these microclimates formed? Blame our system of mountain ridges. Along the Oakland-Orinda border, the Oakland/Berkeley hills shield the inland areas from the assault of fog and winds. Tall hills in San Francisco, such as Twin Peaks, guard sections of the city behind it. The other reason is that wind patterns aren’t widely dispersed. They spew horizontally across San Francisco, reaching into Oakland, and weakens once they reach the Caldecott hills. The cities above, behind, and south of the wind reach retain much of their warm temperatures. And the further away from the Oakland/Berkeley hills, the higher that mercury levels will rise.

“…a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you.”
Instagram’s new policy has inflammed the online world. Many users of the service seem to believe that the company will sell their precious pictures and filtered photographs. From the wording of this policy, that’s certainly the case. And their co-founder’s statement doesn’t stir confidence.
I wish to believe their new legalese is just that–legalese. This sentence clearly spells out a portion their intent: “in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions…” My hypothesis is that Instagram intends to embark upon some heavy advertising campaigns and the new language protects their right to utilize some of their members’ images. How do I know this? Personal experience. Zazzle, Red Bubble, Cafepress, and countless other companies uses the same wording in their terms of service to indicate their images may be used to promote the companies’ services. However, such a policy is inappropriate for a service such as Instagram which is intended for personal sharing of images instead of profiting. But the preceding statement is extremely worrisome: “…a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata)…” This crosses the line of privacy, in which Instagram is granted the right to display your profile information to other companies. I’m surprised there’s scant mention about the use of personal information. The firm could better pull of this policy by utilizing a cost-per-lead affiliate marketing model and share portions with their publishers and image owners. Such an action would “grease the wheels” and stir less controversy.
This of course spells disaster for the firm. I expect that the company will rescind or at least reword the policy. They should start with removing the desire to sell personal users’ data. Second, spell out that they intend to use their members’ images to promote their services. It’ll be interesting to view the results of this PR fiasco.

Berkeley, California is transforming into a giant canvasboard for the mysterious artist, or artists, called “Old Crow.” This tagged cabin was visible from the freeway–the ultimate pinnacle of attention. Detail and skill was devoted to crafting this beautiful masterpiece. It wasn’t the usual lettering slop that rookies and non-artists normally partake in.
“Old Crow” has popped up all over the east bay. A search on Tumblr resulted in images featuring the familiar old man, mainly in the Oakland area. From abandoned buildings, train cars, power poles, and underpasses. Another symbol of Old Crow has also appeared in Berkeley–a green shadow logo.
Old Crow isn’t limited to California. Images have popped up in New York, Arizona, and even the farmland.
This raises a curious question: is Old Crow an actual mysterious artist, akin to the surname Banksy in the U.K.? A group of artists tagging public structures and adopting the moniker?
Is Old Crow also responsible for these images that have appeared on Frontage Road in Emeryville, California? To the right: an impressive display of shadows and bright colors painted successfully on rock.

Occasionally slips up happen in photography. Sometimes two to three practice shots are necessary in order to capture the perfect scenery. Unfortunately this photograph did not make my collection of artwork for sale but I’m willing to share it to you–the visiting public–with this picture. The issue with this photograph is its darkness, lack of excitement, and a surfer is falling into the water (you may fail to see the dot).

While finishing my San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge trek and walking towards Powell Street BART station, I approached Union Square. I visited the Golden Gate Bridge over the weekend. Walking the long distance from Powell BART to Fort Mason, then hopping on the 28 bus, and finally trekking halfway across the bridge (I have my reason for only hiking halfway across the landmark) and then down under it. Well worth it!
